Women’s empowerment in the Real Estate Sector

  • According to INEGI, 41.75% of employed women work in the real estate sector.
  • Female brokers have better opportunities to empathize with clients and close effective deals.

Mexico ranks 33rd on the Global Gender Gap Index by the World Economic Forum, closing at 76.5% in 2023. According to the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO), this positions Mexico two places lower than the previous year. While this study analyzes various aspects of daily life, one of the most crucial is occupational engagement.

Despite a 2.7% decrease in female unemployment in 2023, as reported by the Mexican Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), the National Occupation and Employment Survey (ENOE) indicated that less than 50% of working-age women are incorporated into the job market. However, the real estate market presents an encouraging outlook in the struggle against challenges and gender bias, with only 41.7% of active women engaged in this sector.

This field has not only provided opportunities for women to participate but also to play increasingly important roles. The same inequality they face propels them to exert greater efforts, continually professionalizing their work. Here are some aspects highlighting the relevance of women in the real estate sector.

  • Concern for Professional Development: Women in the industry face gender-related stigmas but have paved the way to confront them through proper preparation. According to a Neximo survey in 2023, 68% have a bachelor’s degree, 18% hold a master’s, and 2% have a doctorate. Demonstrating knowledge in architecture, bank credits, and economics can dispel initial prejudices.
  • Incorporating Emotions in Dealings: Sensitivity, often considered a female trait, can be an advantage in real estate. Buying a house is an investment and a life decision requiring careful consideration. Acknowledging emotions allows female brokers to connect with clients, offer personalized options, and close effective deals.
  • Promoting Equality Conditions: The growing presence of women in real estate is a development benchmark, not just working in traditionally male-dominated activities but also opening doors to leadership roles. Women in this sector play a crucial role in advocating for equal working conditions, particularly in addressing constant variations in salary favoring one gender. For example, IMCO reported a 30% higher income for female personnel in 2022.
  • Demonstrating Strong Leadership Abilities: Women exhibit superior leadership skills, identifying individual talents with precision and promoting organizational cohesion by sharing achievements and reducing individualism. Their ability to multitask contributes to problem-solving, and by the end of 2023, women occupied 38% of leadership positions.
  • Impact on the Real Estate World: Women’s roles extend beyond sales functions to encompass various areas such as entrepreneurship, consulting, architectural design, property management, investment, and fostering professional development.

The presence of women in the real estate sector is of utmost importance, promoting diversity and equal job opportunities. It represents commitment and the potential to harness creativity and skills to the fullest. Their participation also contributes to the economy and national image, emphasizing the need for diverse employment sectors to break down stigmas and integrate female talent.
